Neuropathy

Peripheral neuropathy is a nerve problem that causes pain, numbness and tingling, most commonly in the lower extremities.

Research

There have been numerous scientific studies about the positive effects of light therapy to treat neuropathy. You can review 30 of these studies by clicking the link below:

Causes

Most of these studies are related to diabetes. People with elevated blood sugars (hyperglycemia), if left untreated, are at risk for developing many serious complications. These sugars can eventually damage the small blood vessels to the nerves and without proper blood flow and nutrients, develop neuropathy.

Light Therapy Treatment

Up until now, neuropathy has been treated with pain management drugs that only cover up the symptoms and have many negative side effects. Now, with the use of red light therapy, the focus can be on healing and regenerating the damaged nerve endings.

How does it work

We now know that Light Therapy penetrates deep into the body’s tissues at a cellular level. The Light stimulates the mitochondria and helps to accelerate healing around damaged or injured areas. It does so partly by increasing energized and oxygenated blood flow to the injured tissues.

It is estimated that about 25% to 30% of Americans will be affected by neuropathy. It can affect all ages; however, older people are at an increased risk. Other than age, the more common risk factors for developing neuropathy include diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity and heavy alcohol use. Among commonly cited statistics, 60% to 70% of diabetics suffer with neuropathy.
